Saving Money On Water Usage

If you live in an apartment, townhouse or unit you may be paying more for your water bills than you should.

Many properties managed by Owners Corporations or Body Corporates are engaging plumbing professionals to install individual water meters feeding units rather than just “splitting the bill” between occupants.

Some units have families of 5 living in them whilst others are single occupants – all the while having differing levels of water usage.

Installing individual water meters is a project undertaken between the owners corporation, a licensed plumber and the local water authority to ensure that all occupants are only responsible for the water usage within their occupied unit.

As utility rates for gas, electricity and water increase, many occupants welcome the individual water meter installation as opposed to sharing the quarterly invoice for water usage.

Many older units still have galvanised water lines that should also be replaced for copper.  This will also reduce the likelihood of bursts along the old galvanised line. Something we see a lot of in older areas with building over a certain age.

We recently had a call from someone looking to install a new water meter at his unit and had not called a licensed plumber for advice beforehand.  Paperwork had already been lodged with the relevant local water authority to have a new meter installed and they had been given no framework of the work involved.

Always ensure you speak to a licensed plumber before undertaking any project as you may find yourself stuck in a situation that costs you more than you bargained for.


How To Find A Water Leak

“Of course we do”, came the reply. “Tell me what’s been happening”.

The customer had received a water bill for the last quarter for $3,000. An increase of over 400%!

Immediately the customer requested electronic leak detection services.

Our response is always to conduct testing as a process of elimination to determine what could be causing the water leak. Once all options have been exhausted, we can then safely conduct electronic leak detection.

We ask questions, conduct thorough tests and use our eyes and ears (very important to listen for water) to determine what could be the cause of the water leak.

So here are our 3 Quick Tips for identifying whether you have a water leak in your home.

1. You have received a large water bill: Unless you have had a house full of guests for a lengthy time and water usage has increased, receiving a large water bill will be your first sign that something is wrong.

2. Your water meter is constantly moving quickly. Customers who call with a possible burst pipe would have noticed that with all water fixtures turned off, the water meter is still moving.  Again, a clear sign that there could be a water leak.

3. You can hear water hissing in the wall.  We have had calls where the customer can clearly hear a hissing sound coming from the wall cavity.  Could be a potential burst pipe in the wall.  There could also be water marks on walls, ceiling or floorboards start to buckle.

So if you notice any of these signs call your plumber immediately.  Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there.  Excess water in walls, under floors or in ceilings can cause untold damage and be a safety concern.
